We initially traveled to Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois to get our feet wet with a new camper. Aside from boondocking, we visited Shawnee to explore the beautiful Garden of the Gods.

There’s more to Shawnee National Forest though. A short drive from Garden of the Gods is an interesting rock formation known as Stone Face. Very original name.

Its a 1.6 mile trek to and from Stone Face. Its a relatively easy hike through interesting stone formations.

The hike itself would be worthwhile even without seeing Stone Face at the end. Its a good reminder that its the journey, not the destination, that matters.

The trail rises above the flat Illinois landscape. Even with this overcast February day, it was easy to see for miles. Visiting in autumn would surely produce scenic views and the most Instagram ready shots.
