Camping on The Wall

The Wall is sort of infamous with the boondocking crowd. It’s a cliff that overlooks the South Dakota Badlands. We stayed there amidst the cows on our way to see Crazy Horse and Mount Rushmore.

Before we bought our camper, we read a lot about boondocking. My sister and brother in law already had a Class C RV and did their share of stealth camping. We were excited to do something similar.

The Wall wasn’t our first time boondocking but it did provide some of the most stunning views.

There are several names for the area. Officially, it is a national grassland (like a national forest). Some people call it the Badlands Dispersed Camping Area. Those in the know seem to stick with The Wall.

There’s space aplenty. Any size rig will fit. Just come prepared. There’s no facilities here. The nearby town of Wall, South Dakota, is your best chance.

Also, cows!

The Badlands make for a beautiful landscape.

Don’t be fooled. There’s good reason for a name like Badlands. When we visited the park, it was scorching hot. The Wall is slightly cooling but regular wind.

With the heat, arid environment, and plentiful fuel around (grass), open flames are not permitted. Honestly, we ate chili for dinner and it was a horrible idea. It was too hot for anything like that.

One of the best sunrises I have ever witnessed.

Braver souls than us set up closer to the edge. With young kids, we weren’t taking those chances.
