That’s what M calls Turkey Run State Park. It is one of Indiana’s most visited and best known state parks. It’s a favorite hiking location for our family as well.
The kids always ask for Trail 3. It’ll take you through beautiful canyons, up (or down) ladders, and into the Devil’s Punch Bowl.

Turkey Run is an awesome reminder that Indiana isn’t just flat (or corn and beans).

Shoots and Ladders
Ladders are one of the cooler features. Just be prepared when hiking Trail 3. There’s no avoiding ladders mid trail as its the only one up/down the trail.

There are some easier, relatively flat trails but be aware, many of them have extensive steps as well.
Winter Hiking
When K and C were in scouts, we hiked with the troop one very cold November day. By cold, I mean single digits cold. In Alaska or Michigan, that might make for a cheerfully warm day. For a Hoosier, that’s downright cold. That also meant Turkey Run was empty.

Pro tip: hike in the extreme cold to avoid crowds.
Use Caution
As with any hike, be aware of your surroundings. Turkey Run is generally well maintained. I’ve seen people hike barefoot, but I error on the side of proper hiking boots. Something waterproof can be helpful too as trails plunge into wet canyons.

There are steps built into the stone bypassing some of the water. However, rocks on popular trails are polished from wear and very slick.
Sugar Creek is a popular summer cool off stop. Many people swim in the creek though signs warn against this. The same forces that carved the beautiful canyons in Turkey Run also wore rock away along the creek. This creates a strong (read: deadly) undertow that can pull swimmers under.
Other Tips
There’s no potable water along the trails. Fill up at the Nature Center located by the parking lot before hiking. Likewise, there’s no other facilities after crossing the suspension bridge. Go before its too late.
Try hiking behind the Turkey Run Inn. There are several trails, great views, and much less foot traffic.
